Tron Captures 52% of Low-Value USDT Transfers Globally

Key Takeaways

Tron Solidifies Stance as Stablecoin Chain, Leading USDT Market Capitalization and Card Settlements

Tron, a smart-contracts-enabled blockchain, has solidified its standing as the stablecoin chain, mainly driven by sustained USDT activity on its network.

According to Messari’s latest State of Tron report, the project’s stablecoin market capitalization grew 4.1% compared to Q1, with USDT comprising almost 99% of all the stablecoins in the chain.

In the same way, Tron became the largest host of Tether’s flagship stablecoin in Q2 with $87.9 billion USDT, compared to Ethereum’s $78.7 billion. The share continued to grow and is now close to 91 billion.

Tron is now more relevant for stablecoin payments after implementing a new gasless feature allowing fee-free transactions without paying TRX. In addition, it enjoys a first-mover advantage, being heavily favored in emerging economies such as those in Africa and Latin America. This is why it leads sub-1,000 transfers amidst native-issuance chains, capturing 52% of these “low value” movements.

The chain also registered record activity for the third consecutive quarter, with average daily transactions hitting 11.8 million and average active daily addresses growing to 3.6 million during Q2.

Alex Obchakevich, finance researcher and partner at Artemis, an AI analysis firm, highlighted that the extremely good results posted show the blockchain has “real, non-speculative, stable demand that is monetized without subsidies and is not dependent on market cycles,” mostly driven by its focused use in stablecoin transfers and payments.

“Over the past three quarters, the chain has added institutional access infrastructure and its first RWA launch,” he pointed out.

Obchakevich added that Tron was also leading in crypto card settlements, with the share of crypto card volumes rising to $887 million, capturing 34% of this market, the highest of any chain. Tron still maintains its lead in Q3 with a 21% chain market share for top-up volumes, registering 108.5 million of the total $509.6 million tracked.
